You can conceivably do most of your driving on battery-powered electric motors which are then recharged during stints where the gas engine kicks in. It is a quite crafty design, but the drawback is that relative to other hybrids, it may not be worth the premium in price. The Honda hybrids run the gas motors all the time and use electric motors to assist. The gas motor also automatically shuts off when the car comes to a stop. It takes a bit of getting used to when driving it in stop and go traffic, but the car is fantastic for commuting purposes and running errands, basically any non-recreational driving. I bought a 2010 model fully-equipped for FAR less than I could find a comparable Prius and the difference in mileage is not that significant depending on how you drive. Round trip from Miami to Key West just a couple of weeks ago......56 mpg
I have regularly gotten 44-46mpg driving around town on and off freeways and city streets fairly equally. $30 to fill up in south Florida, 9 gallons. Hell of a beater for 15k all said and done.
